Pu'ukohola Heiau National Historic Site is a revered historical landmark located on the island of Hawaii. This sacred site holds great cultural and historical significance for the native Hawaiian people. The site is home to the Pu'ukohola Heiau temple, which was built in the late 18th century by King Kamehameha I. A group of 5 of us trekked this National Park on 12-5-23. There was a well done video that was loud enough and very informative + interesting. The interior building was well displayed with artifacts, but the area seemed EXTREMELY cramped. The exterior walk to the temple was a nice jaunt. Amazing what the early Hawaiians lives were like. I highly recommend this Park. It is a relatively quick adventure, but well worth the visit
Ranger George gave us an excellent presentation on the 700 year history of Hawaii and the temple hill and its construction that resulted in the unification of the eight islands under one king rather than the eight chieftains who once ruled the individual islands and often warred with each other. Great and understandable.
Great historical site. The story of King Kamehameha of how and why he had this temple built is compelling. You must to watch the excellent video in the visitor center to get the story about the temple, otherwise it will just look like a bunch of rocks.
We made this our last stop after our Big Island vacation and it was so fitting. This is probably the most historically significant place in Hawaii. The site which led to the end of war and fighting between the islands and unity. So much history here and Hawaiian culture. The park rangers were so informative and the visitor center had great additional information. Easy trail walk and of course, a beautiful setting. Great place to walk and reflect. It is a sacred place, respect is needed.
This is a very interesting and informative place to visit. There's a video about the king and his battles to become leader of the island. The views are breathtaking. The gift shop is a good place to get a souvenir or two.
I highly recommend visiting this culturally significant site! The story of King Kamehameha I is truly fascinating, and this museum and temple helped me appreciate the story and history so much better!
Very cool piece of Hawaiian history. I would highly recommend stopping by the visitor center to watch the video. It is a pretty quick little stop that is worth the visit.
If you want to learn more about the significant history behind the Kingdom of Hawaii and culture, you should consider adding this site as part of your visit when you're on the big island. The location is approximately 45-60 mins from Kailua-Kona town but the drive is beautiful.
We were lucky to have Ranger George, a dedicated park ranger who has served at the historical site for 13 years and is passionate at what he does. He gave us an extensive briefing about the story of the heiau (temple), the sad human sacrifice and King Kamehameha's odyssey to unite all the Hawaiian islands to one kingdom, and to put a stop to wars and human sacrifice.
The place is sacred so be respectful when you visit and stay on the trail when you are walking. They have a public restroom and water dispenser on site, and ample parking space. There's a beach next to it called Spencer Beach park if you want to eat your lunch after a day of learning. There's no restaurants nearby as far as I can tell so pack some snacks.
